Formerly in the Spanish Sahara, Dahale, previously called Villa Cisneros, is a city in Western Sahara under Moroccan control. The city lies on the Atlantic Ocean.The area has been inhabited by berbers since antiquity. Dahale was established by the Spanish settlers. In the 1960s the Spaniards built an airport and in 1976 the last of the Spanish soldiers took off when Spain evacuated the colony of its own initiative. From 1975 to 1979, Dahale was the capital of the southern province of Western Sahara, which was then ruled by Mauritania.
